Sleepy Bear Lovely is one of those versatile little makes that can be made as a last minute gift for a baby shower. It works up very fast and uses only basic stitches so that it is suitable for a beginner.

To make Sleepy Bear lovey. Here is what you will need.

Approx 90g of any fuzzy yarn (although normal will work also) I used Sidar Snuggly, which can be bought here. You will also need a 3.5mm crochet hook. My favourite hooks are the Clover Amour range available here. You will also need some polyfibre stuffing, scissors, stitch markers and a needle to sew in your ends.

The main blanket of the lovey is a granny square. Here is my guide to a granny.

Blanket section should measure approximately 38cm square.

A granny square is made up of groups a 3 DC *(TR).  In each hole you should have 3 DC (TR) .  Each corner group will have (3 DC (TR), CH1, 3DC (TR)) all in the one hole.

Make a slip knot then chain 4 times. Insert your hook into the chain furthest from the hook and pull a loop through (the first chain that you made).  Making a slip stitch and creating a circle which is the centre ring of your granny square.  The first round is made working all of your DC (TR)into this ring. I use stitch markers to visually mark each corner making it easier to understand where the stitches should go.

Round 1:  Chain 3 (This chain will act as your first DC (TR). Make 2 more DC (TR) into the ring. (1st group of 3 DC (TR) completed)

*Chain 1 and place 3 DC (TR) into the ring. *

Repeat * * until you have a total of 4 groups of 3 DC (TR) all joined by a chain 1.

3.jpg

Round 2:  CH3, and place 2 more DC (TR) into the hole directly at the bottom of the chain.  (This is the first half of our corner and will only be closed when we’ve worked our way back around again.) Ch1, place 3 DC (TR) into the next hole. CH1, now we are working into a corner.  3 DC (TR) into the hole. Ch1, place 3 more DC (TR) into the same hole. Moving onto the next hole, 3 DC (TR).

Keep repeating this process to grow your square.

4.jpg

At the final corner, we only place 1 group of 3 DC (TR) instead we join the 1st and last groups with a CH1, SL ST into the top of the chain. CH3 to begin our new row, repeating the whole process again until the square is the size required.

Assembly

With brown/black embroider eyes and nose features.

Sew ears and head firmly to the granny square.  Due to the nature of the yarn, I used strands of acrylic 4ply in order to securely attach all pieces.

Place the head slightly off the centre of the contrast colour for the head.
